The Consortium for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine (chstm.org) will host a new working group “Women, Gender and Sexuality in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine” beginning this fall. We imagine the categories “women,” “gender,” and “sexuality” as capacious ones. We welcome, for example, histories of women in the sciences or histories of queer people in medicine, while also hoping to discuss work that interrogates the formation of classifications like “women” and “queer” and “sex” themselves. We envision this as a space that foregrounds intersectional and critical approaches, in keeping with the cutting edge of scholarship in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies that addresses the inseparability of those categories from race, colonialism, disability, and other axes of power. All interested scholars are welcome. You can become a member of the group by clicking Request group membership at the top of this page.
Do you have a research project, pedagogical innovation, public outreach initiative, writing in-progress for dissertations, publications, or online forums, or other creative works related to the history of women, gender or sexuality in HSTM that you’d like to share with the working group? We are currently soliciting proposals to present; if you are interested in sharing your work please see the “Submit a Proposal” link at the bottom of this page. The meetings will be held monthly on Fridays from 1:30 -3:00 CST, hosted on Zoom.
