2026 Joint Meeting of the European Society for the History of Science (ESHS) and History of Science Society (HSS)

The Commission is pleased to announce the forthcoming ESHS/HSS Joint Conference, scheduled to take place in Edinburgh in July 2026, on the theme Shifting Perspectives: Plural Worlds, Contested Sciences.
The Commission on Women and Gender in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine offers funding support for early-career scholars whose accepted contributions lack institutional funding.

Funding & Support
The Commission on Women and Gender in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine offers need‑based travel and registration support for accepted conference participants who qualify as Scholars in Need (e.g. students, early‑career or precariously employed scholars).
Application deadline: 14 May 2026
Notification of outcomes: Before the early registration deadline of 27 May 2026
Space
Eligibility: Applicants must:
- Have a presentation accepted into the official conference programme (any role, including speaker, chair, or roundtable participant),
- Present work that is relevant to the Commission’s focus on women and gender in the history of science, technology, and medicine,
- Meet DHST’s definition of Scholars in Need, including (but not limited to): Students, early career researchers, precariously employed scholars, scholars with low income or limited access to institutional conference funding.
How to Apply?
Please submit one single PDF file by email to Isabelle.Lemonon@univ-nantes.fr including the following elements:
- Conference contribution description (abstract length):
- Title and short description of your presentation
- Explanation of how your work relates to the Commission
- Your role at the conference (e.g. speaker, chair, panelist)
- Scheduled session and time slot (if available)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV):
- Including the date, or anticipated date, of PhD conferral
- A very brief justification of your status as a Scholar in Need (e.g. “I am a PhD student”)
- Funding request estimate:
- Estimated costs for travel and/or registration
- Information on any confirmed or pending alternative funding sources
- Any additional context you wish the Committee to consider
Applicants are welcome to elaborate where brief remarks are insufficient.
Please note: Funding will be provided by reimbursement after the conference, upon submission of appropriate invoices.
